Stichting Projekta
Projekta is a rights-based organization that works to connect human rights, governance and democracy with a specific focus on gender equality and women's rights. As RBO, we look at processes in terms of duty bearers and rights holders and work with both parties to ensure compliance with human rights for all. We work to build capacity for the voice of rights holders and capacity for responsiveness, good governance and accountability of duty bearers. Projekta creates and facilitates spaces for dialogue so that duty bearers and rights holders can plan, implement and monitor development agendas and programs and hold each other accountable. For Projekta, a strong civil society is the key to strong democracies, which in turn are necessary for the fulfillment of human rights.
This is reflected in our current mission:
In pursuit of gender equality and democratization of governance in Suriname, our mission is to increase the substantial participation of women, youth and other underrepresented groups in the process of human development. We do this through rights-based programs aimed at increasing capacity, awareness and voice in policymaking, implementation and monitoring at local, provincial and international levels; and creating spaces for dialogue.

We are not a community-based organization or an organization that works with a specific target group, but we are more intermediary issue-based NGOs, often involved in policy or research. As an intermediary NGO, when we work with/in communities, our primary beneficiaries are more often community-based organizations, who in turn work in different communities. This is different per project.
We work with partners working in diverse communities, such as Indigenous women and girls living in villages, the LGBTQ community - For Indigenous women and girls, we address the issue of access to culturally sensitive support in cases of domestic violence. Due to the small size and remote locations of most villages, government and other social services are not readily available. At the same time, there is a culture of normalization of sexual and domestic violence, often linked to alcohol use. - For the LGBTQ community, we address (among others) the following problems: a lack of organizational capacity of LGBTQ organizations, lack of public knowledge and acceptance, and lack of rules, regulations and legislation for LGBTQ rights.

Our programs and activities are designed with a rights-based approach, whether they involve local communities or not. We aim to increase the responsibility of duty bearers through, for example, dialogue, advocacy and building capacity for participatory policy monitoring; and establishing accountability mechanisms with other community groups. We use lobbying and advocacy as a strategy for agenda setting and policy change.
Another strategy is capacity building, in various areas such as organizational management, being a safe space for LGBT youth and./r victims of sexual and domestic violence, organizing awareness activities,
We conduct awareness campaigns, often through the use of video and images, distributed via social media.
All our other strategies are always built on a foundation of research; We conduct research in various areas: legislation, policy, civil society capacity, public opinion, social issues. As well as regular M&E-related research/data collection.
